The Larder Cafe is a fabulous spot that opened in Diep River fairly recently. Located inside the Block & Chisel on the corner of Kendal and Main Road, The Larder Cafe serves delicious food made from ingredients sourced locally from small producers. I stopped in a few weeks ago and loved the look and feel, and the food was scrumptious.
You can eat there, choosing from their daily chalkboard menu, or buy something to take home from their oh-so-very tempting display of cakes, tarts and confectionary.
Not long after opening up, the cafe began selling a small amount of fresh farm produce – things like heirloom tomatoes, farm butter, free range eggs and so on – and from this coming Thursday they’re taking it a step further and will be holding a regular afternoon market.
These small food-focused markets (like the Starlings Urban Farmers Market) are my favourite kind. Simple and to the point: it’s all about the food and connecting city-dwellers with those who make, source or grow it. Love it.
And, they’re off to a fabulous start: you can’t lose when there’ll be fresh fish from Ocean Jewels, bacon and other pork products by Cure Deli, free range chicken and eggs from Simply Wholesome and – the cherry on top – delectable hand-made ice cream from The Creamery.
So, if you like your produce uber-fresh and uber-local, and are anywhere near Diep River this Thursday (and any Thursday thereafter), check out The Larder Cafe from 11am-1pm and take a basket (and a cooler bag, for aforementioned ice cream, mmmm…)
