This July, Simon’s in Groot Constantia will host the Hop ‘n’ Vine Festival, a feast of craft beer, craft wine and food – the first of what they plan to make a series of quarterly events.
Festival-goers can enjoy a market vibe on the lawns as well as an indoor area for savouring and comparing beer and wine styles. The event celebrates the craft of brewing in a friendly atmosphere that will allow festival goers to chat with the brewers about the brewing process, the tasting regime and of course, about which beers and wines to pair with the foods available at the fest.
Hopefully, if this event proves hugely popular (as is likely – we Capetonians do rather like our food and wine fests), they’ll keep the numbers limited. I personally wouldn’t stay long if it was anything near as crowded as the last Craft Beer Festival I attended at the Biscuit Mill… though I guess this particular venue does allow for a little spreading out.
So, what can you expect?
Over 15 of the finest brewers from around the country – including Gauteng breweries making their debut in the Cape as well as 6 of the top Garagistes – will unite with Cape chefs cooking cuisine designed to pair perfectly with the wide range of beers and wines on show. Between sips enjoy some local live music and browse craft stalls or simply chat to the experts to learn more about the amber nectar as well as the concept of Garagistes.
It sounds like fun to me. I think it’s really awesome that craft beer- and wine-makers are getting the attention they deserve – and I’m looking forward to seeing how the chefs pair the food with the various brews and wines on offer.
