Exciting news for foodies in the Constantia area: a new food market is about to launch at the sports grounds opposite Constantia Village.
A little while back I took a look at what’s natural and organic at the upcoming SA Cheese Festival (coming up this weekend, yay!). But natural and organic isn’t the be-all and end-all. Just because a cheese is made in a natural way using organic ingredients, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a great product. It takes the skill of an artisan to bring out the best in a cheese, and it’s those guys that I’m spotlighting today.
Hooray, I get to give tickets away to one of my favourite food festivals in the country. Tickets normally cost R110, but between now and the 21st of April, ten readers stand the chance to win a ticket to this awesome cheesy feast.
Remember that old Farmer Brown ad: ‘They taste so good, ’cause they eat so good’? It turns out that a diet of grubs, grass, grain, fresh air and sunshine makes the tastiest chickens of all. On 6 March 2010 a group of Slow Fooders visited Spier to learn more about their biodynamic farming methods.
There’s an exciting new market on the scene… At the end of January, the first Waldorf Night Market was held at the lovely grounds of Waldorf School in Constantia. Ever curious, and loving the idea of an evening market, I went along to take a look , and I was really impressed by the quality and variety on offer.
A new summer CSA is on the cards for 2010. This one will run for 10 weeks (Tuesday 26 January through Tuesday 30 March) and in addition to the uber-fresh organic vegetables members will receive every week, the deliveries will also include mushrooms and preserves from other sustainable food producers and projects.
A couple of weeks ago I ventured out to Backsberg Estate to attend a discussion on eco-friendly and organic wines. On the agenda, four passionate producers who are making a difference in their field, each in their own way.
The Earth Fair Market is gearing up for silly season and hosting a series of themed events, the first of which takes place this evening (and has started at the time of writing this). A little early for Mardi Gras, perhaps, but it’s definitely likely to be rather festive!
