Do you remember going to craft markets that had real handmade goods? That weren’t wall-to-wall cheap imports from Asia and the rest of Africa?
Wikipedia defines crafts as “a whole host of activities and hobbies that are related to making things with one’s own hands and skill”.
Original ideas, innovative designs… Tasty tasty pickles and biscuits and other home-made goodies to tantalise the taste-buds. I used to love going to markets.
But I found that ‘craft markets’ became very commercial over the years, with very little ‘craft’ and far too much mass-produced rubbish that certainly wasn’t made by South African hands.
Happily, there is a new craft market on the horizon, a market called the Constantia Country Living Market, and it will make its debut on Saturday the 16th of September at the Cape Academy (Firgrove Way, Constantia).
The market will be open from 8.00am to 3.00pm and will be offering ‘classic crafts and food from the earth, for the body, mind and soul’.
Thereafter, the market will be held on the 3rd Saturday of every month.
*update: this market no longer operates, unfortunately. see comments below for other options*

Hi Tendai
Unfortunately, this market does not exist any more. You could try something like the Constantia Valley Farmers Market in Plumstead – they have some craft there, though not a lot. I will email contact details for the organisers to you.
Thank you for the good tips on this website on markets in CPT. Can you please be so kind to e-mail me contact details of the Constantia Valley Farmers Market & the Porter Estate Produce market.

HELLO! i am a mosaic artist. I would love to sell my mirrors at the market, who can I contact to sign up? Thank you! Tammy: misbehaviour@live.com
Hi Tammy
The Constantia Country Living Market unfortunately no longer exists. However, there are a number of markets you might find would be a fit for your mosaic mirrors… though you probably already know about them!
Anyway, in case you don’t, there’s the Porter Estate Produce Market in Tokai, which features some craft, in between fresh produce. Then there’s the Constantia Valley Farmers Market, which takes place every Saturday at the 3Arts Centre in Plumstead (though that’s also quite food centred). And a new market, the Novalis Spring Market, kicking off later this month at the Novalis Institute in Wynberg – 20 September.
I’ve emailed more details.
Hope that helps!

Good day all,
My mom makes the most beautiful jewellery and accessories and would love to get involved in craft markets but unfortunately we do not know how to go about this… can anyone please guide us or provide details of craft markets?

The V&A has two Craft based centres for the sale of unique and interesting HAND-MADE items. It is increasingly difficult to find items genuinely made locally and with the fload of “copied” items in the market place as well as the influx of goods from Africa we are always looking for crafters with entrepreneurial spirit.
We have the ideal environment for artists and crafters to sell their goods to high end customers, but as we are open 7 days a week, this is not for the feint hearted! If you are interested in enquiring further, please provide your contact details, previous trade experience and a photograph of what you create to craftadmin@waterfront.co.za. Please note that only serious enquiries with full detail as outlined above will be responded to, all rentals and conditions will be discussed as part of the application process.
Hi, we are planning a three-day event on the last weekend of November (venue to be confirmed) and I’m looking for crafters who are free that weekend to set up their stalls This is a once-off opportunity. Please can you put the word out or let me have some leads as to who to offer this to.
Thanks very much
Milly

Is there anybody out there with the info we need? Please email me. Thanx Ruwaida
Hi. To all who is interested a new craft market will be opening the end of November 2009 in the South of Johannesburg. It will be held indoors, so no worries of cancellations due to rain or any other unforseen circumstances. We are still on the look out for all types of handmade items. Please send us an email and more information will be forwarded to you. (ariesdesign@mweb.co.za)

There is a ‘real’ boot sale held on 1st Saturday of every month at the Masonic Hall, Glencairn from early to midday.
Great place to rummage.
Hi Anita
We used to attend the boot sale at Glencairn Phoenix Hall, not sure if it is the same as the Masonic Hall at Glencairn you mention.
What a fantastic atmosphere until one Saturday morning when we were told we could not park where we used to as the “spot was reserved, can you not read?”. We were so shocked at the rudeness we just moved our vehicle and goods for sale, because we did not wish to cause a scene. I am still trying to find out why it was reserved as I understand that no stands are reserved it is “first come first served”.
That left a very bitter taste and we have since then not been back. We have have been advised that the “reserved spot” is in actual fact not reserved, so what was the problem?
We will one day go back and hope that we will not be chased away again.
Have A Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2011.
